BILBERRY - Vaccinium myrtillus
Traditional use: circulatory tonic, antioxidant, tonic to eyes & vision, nutritive

Bilberry first gained attention as a medicinal herb during World War II, when American pilots in Europe regularly ate the jam, which is not a common item in the US. Anecdotal evidence from that time suggested that these pilots' vision improved greatly, with less fatigue and eyestrain and greater adaptability to changes in light.

Bilberry contains anthocyanins, bioflavonoids which strengthen the capillaries throughout the body. In addition to the protective and healing effects on the eyes and their diseases, such as glaucoma and retina disorders, Bilberry is used wherever the capillaries are not functioning well, as in poor peripheral circulation and varicose veins. Finally, Bilberries are antioxidant to all the tissues which they affect.
