A classic and much-relied on tonic to the nervous system and for all types of pain. Scullcap calms the heart and acts on the central nervous system to slow its action and response, making it useful for conditions such as headaches, nervous tension, irritability, insomnia and even depression or exhaustion from emotional causes. Beside its quick symptom-relieving action, Scullcap contains nutrients and minerals which are nourishing and strengthening to the nerve tissue and system, increasing their health in the long term.
It is also a sedative and anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory relaxant to deep muscles, tendons and ligaments. Many herbalists use Skullcap to ease withdrawal from alcohol and depressant drugs. In Ayurveda, Skullcap is used with Gotu Kola to increase clarity, detachment, and awareness, and with Ashwagandha as a nerve tonic.
